Wolfgang's philosophy of painting is rooted in the concept that mind, soul and body come together, creating a richness of observation that becomes the essence of creation. Long walks, meditation, travel, museums, galleries, and good conversation enrich the artist's imagination and motivation. He continually strives for a strong relationship between the learned process and spontaneous expression.
Wolfgang’s early training to the classical study of shapes, rendering, paint, design and posing began at Western Reserve University in Ohio. He then received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Central Michigan University, and then
earned a Master of Fine Art degree from Michigan State University. This latter art study introduced him to a more open-ended approach with emphasis on ideas, originality, and creativity.
Even with the formal training, Wolfgang admits that most of the new techniques he learns are from what he does as he creates. He alludes to his eclectic style by describing himself as the "Van Morrison of Painting!"
Wolfgang has been selling his art for most of his adult life and has taught art and photography for thirty-four years at Flushing High School near Flint. His Island gallery is visited by many former students who have been mentored by Wolfgang in their own artistic careers. He is exhibited throughout the Midwest and has won many awards. His original paintings hang in private collections across the United States, Canada, and Europe.
During the winter season Richard and his wife, Helen reside in Port Austin, Michigan.
